After a year of so many ups and downs, it’s interesting to see how our design choices are beginning to change. Are we thinking differently about our homes now? And how will this affect our kitchen design choices specifically?
There’s no doubt that there has been an increased desire to ensure our homes are calming and relaxing – our very own sanctuaries of safety away from the stresses and worries of the outside world. So, after almost a year of spending more time at home, and certainly more time in the kitchen, what trends do we see coming through for the year ahead? We’ve taken a look at what we think will be the biggest kitchen trends for 2021, from color and surface choices to finishes and layout.
Minimalist Kitchens
If this past year has taught us anything it is how to declutter, streamline, and simplify your life... In both our lives and our homes, we have taken a step back to consider what we really need and what is important. When it comes to kitchens, this means more minimalist design. From clever integrated storage ideas and concealed appliances to intelligent spatial planning, people will be looking to create the illusion of more space and overall make sure it the kitchen doesn’t seem cluttered, ensuring that it evokes a feeling of tranquillity.
RUGGED CONCRETE - LT QUARTZ
Muted Colour Palettes
Continuing with the theme of seeking a feeling of calmness and tranquillity in the home, muted pastels and earthy tones are experiencing a surge in popularity throughout the entire home. Reflected in fashion and colour trends – where rattan, wicker and stone have had a clear prominence, and let’s not forget PALISSANDRO BLUE – we are expecting to see a lot more kitchens bringing in calming paint colour schemes, paired with a lot of natural textures and finishes.

Dark Surfaces
Whilst some turn to more muted colors for a calming scheme, we are also seeing an increased interest in dark shades – in particular when it comes to surfaces in the kitchen. Whether used as a sharp contrast to lighter coloured cabinetry or paired with bold dark cupboards, dark worktops are definitely on the up and we are for one very excited to see what kind of dark kitchen schemes come through next year.

Statement Surfaces
From strongly veined marble to unique and colourful slabs, homeowners and designers are on a mission to make a statement! With an increase in the number of people opting to renovate their homes instead of selling and moving, the desire to make a real standout feature of surfaces has become more and more prominent. Waterfall islands and feature splash backs are two ways we expect to see statements being made in the kitchen, as well as the introduction of more colourful and exotic stones, for that added bit of wow-factor!

Greens & Blues
Greens, however, are starting to come through more and more. Possibly a link to the uplift in interest in making the home feel more ‘natural’, deep forest greens could easily become the star in 2021!

Last year was the year of the navy blue, and we don’t see this going anywhere fast! We may see a lean towards a more teal inspired blue palette in the reception but overall we expect dark blues to remain one of the most popular colour choices.

Warm Metallic Finishes
Warm metallics such as brass have been rising in popularity for a few years, in both kitchens and bathrooms. With a move away from conventional and strict pairings when it comes to metallics, we think we’ll continue to see more brushed and matte brass and stainless steel finishes across kitchens in 2021.

Pairing with Wood
With an ever-evolving interest in natural materials, many homeowners and designers are looking to bring hints of wood into kitchen designs in more creative ways. Often combined with a marble or natural stone worktop on a kitchen island or breakfast bar, reclaimed wood can sit beautifully against any scheme and will add a sense of warmth and depth to the space.

Textured & Natural Finsishes
The desire to create warm and inviting spaces has led to people seeking more textured, matte and natural surfaces throughout the whole kitchen. It feels as though a bit of a pull away from the high-shine gloss kitchens and a move towards a more laid-back and comforting appeal. Worktop surfaces that are more structured in appearance will provide more texture and instantly feel more natural and warming – they also give you the opportunity to really appreciate their unique appearance, seeing all the different grooves and knots in all their glory!
